Having recently looked at the Max Factory Zero Suit Samus, let’s check out another Good Smile Company product, the Samus Aran Varia Suit Figma!

This is my first proper Figma review! I checked the Mickey Mouse one before but that’s not a standard Figma. This one has all the joints and articulation that a standard one does. This also happens to be the first Nintendo Figma figure, being followed up in a few months by Link. It comes in a small and tightly contained box, which is a huge plus for saving on international shipping. All the items are packed well with no chance of them slipping around in there.
I absolutely love the articulation on this. As soon as I popped it open, I was putting it in all sorts of action poses. Perhaps it’s due to the armour design or how it’s weighted but it was so simple to get it in good poses. Mine weren’t quite as exciting as the poses on the box but even so, they’ve done a fantastic job. Given the amount of action in a typical Metroid game, it won’t be hard to find a suitable pose and the stand gives you a decent degree of flexibility, even trying for mid-air poses (though if it were weighted a little more, you could totally do better ones).
Samus comes with the energy ball form of herself, which is neat but not particularly useful. In more useful accessories, two energy blasts and the open front end of the cannon to show it shooting! Plus a few separate hand types of course, the thumbs up being my personal favourite. I’m sure they could’ve given her more accessories but hey, it’s a start. I haven’t compared the sculpt to in-game screenshots but it sure looks and feels accurate.
The paintjob is dead on, particularly considering the size. Bright bold colours when necessary, shiny enough metallics to have some reflection to them, darker reds and greens in certain areas. The energy effects have some translucency to them. The helmet looks spot on as well.
4.5/5. I could’ve done with more accessories but the figure itself is fantastic and a wonderful start to the Figma Nintendo series. With the high prices it’s going for, hopefully Figma still has another shipment for people who missed out.
